Problems turn into opportunities: Just be creative!
This past weekend we had some major mixups on our worship team schedule–think summer, weddings, vacations, July 4 holiday, staffing 3 complete teams each weekend, drum mics stolen off the stage, etc. I knew Saturday morning that I would not have a drummer and bass player for our CELEBRATION service, so our typical rock-your-socks-off worship set was not going to fly. So, Jim, my good friend playing guitar in the picture, on the phone encouraged me to just wing it with him and that his son would play percussion the next morning.
As I was on the phone, I was chatting via IM with Zach, my intern-production assistant. Zach says "candles" would be great. He had already reset the stage once! This would be another change. So, I reworked the worship songs, downloaded some new backgrounds for the ProPresenter, went to Target to buy out every votive they had and in a couple hours our worship set and look was changed. I even, to my delight, brought out my new Marshall acoustic amp for the first time.
Nario, our sound tech, and Abbie (his wife), our projection tech were there early and were indispensable in helping set and reset the stage. (It is cool to see a married couple serve together in the tech booth!) With Abbie’s eye for candles (she also found a whole other box of candles) and Nario’s skill in making us sound good we were ready and rehearsal went off without a hitch.
When the service actually began, people sang loudly and were into the vibe. We emphasized confession and it was neat to watch people take that opportunity to connect with God. Part of what I reminded them is that confession for sin as well as confession of our adoption goes together as does how God’s Spirit convicts us. He convicts us both of our sin and of our sonship. God’s grace is amazing.
Initially my blood pressure went up when things seemed to be falling apart. I like to be a perfectionist at times, but it seems God reminds me often that His plans are always greater. This past weekend was no exception. The raucous set we designed was transformed due to things out of our control, but not out of God’s control. The results were truly full of God’s fingerprints. All I can say to that is, "COOL!"
