Pastoral Ambition: Where do you draw the line?
There is a great post at Our of Ur blog entitled: Pastoral Ambition: Does success chip away at our souls? What strikes me about this is that the pastor writing this post really knew success. I know what "success" is, in my own right. I mean, I am a worship pastor at a large church. I have even been at larger churches in this role than my current church. My life is public. People recognize me at the grocery store and at Target. Other worship leaders talk to me, and some even value my opinion. I even have a nice home. Things are great. At least that is what things look like.
I love this article because the premise is that our souls as leaders
are at risk. What leader really cares about their soul? I mean,
leaders are by nature ambitious. We want results. We live for the
win. We stress over the losses. Life is large. Our influence is
real. I confess that celebrity is intoxicating. One leader came and
spoke at my church. He met me and said, "You are quite a musical
celebrity around here." Wow. Not only is that dangerous for the
health of my soul, it is not what I want my legacy to be. I want my
legacy to be about lives changed. I want my resume to be written on
the hearts of men, not in the dead, stone-cold journals of ministry
stardom. Lord, forgive me. Lord, forgive us in places of influence. Let our names decrease and your name increase!
