Worship Setlist – 2/24/08: Donuts and coffee, Emilie sings again, and the “dialog”…

We had donuts and coffee inside the worship center!  For some of you, that might be the norm.  For our church, it was a big deal.  What was so good about this was the connecting that people were having between services.  I have never seen this level of community since our Annual Celebration picnic.  The response was overwhelmingly positive.

My daughter Emilie once again was my backing vocalist in the
band, helping me lead worship with such passion.  Of course, I am proud
of her and not just of her talent, but of her sense of calling.  God
has shaped this budding young woman for something very special in her
life.  My prayer is to allow her access and mentorship to be the woman,
artist and leader God has called her to be.

One thing I try to remind our people during worship services is that this activity is a dialog with God.  Not only do we by faith believe God will speak to us, but we also by faith come to God with things that we should say to Him.
This means that the time of music and prayer in our service are
opportunities to chime in with God.  I think we accomplished this a bit
this week!

    From the time I got out of bed God was telling me it was going to be a great day, and it was. Rehearsal, worship music, DONUTS IN THE WORSHIP CENTER!!! Community being built in the house of God. The Brook was awesome even with the rain and our Life Group, best group ever so far. Rich, thanks for being a part of most of it. Your friendship and leadership is so under appreciated, but you are awesome.

    We had a fairly good worship service this weekend. We’ve started a follow-up small group to discuss the focus text of the message and it has been growing each week. It looks like we may have to break it into two groups to allow for sufficient discussion.

    I think it’s better with the doughnuts in the room instead of ushering people out through our almost-useless hallway into the parking lot to get some treats, in the harsh weather. Not at at least, when they can choose to remain cozy inside with everyone else. Besides, what you’re really doing in that sense is telling them to head towards their cars (and home) and not fellowship at all.

    My one request is that going with the whole Sunridge untraditional coffee-house vibe we’re always keen to create, we substitute something less messy than sugar glazed and sprinkle coated doughnuts. Why not scones and biscotti? Sure it’s crumbly and bready, but not being sugar coated means that it’s less work for people to clean up and we’ll not have to worry about pests and ants in the worship center licking the sugar from the floor.

    And you can buy the biscotti in container-ship sized individually-wrapped portions at Costco. (Great for people who have food-handling sanitation issues wondering if some runny-nose kid has just personally inspected the one you want to eat.) Otherwise we might have to rip out the carpet in a few months from careless 6-year olds completely destroying it every week. Which would completely ruin the whole vibe of the room.

    We need to figure out what to do best with the room we have and available resources and not try and reinvent the wheel by tearing things apart and extensively modifying something to do X when it was designed for Y.

    I wasn’t leading this week, but there were a lot of noticeable mistakes. Whether it was with scipture reading or coming in at the wrong place, etc. But we’re still learning as we’re incorporating different cultural elements.

    Hi Rich,

    I thought the donuts and coffee were so important this week! We need to work on developing community with all the people who walk in and out of church every week with no connection and this was a great way to do that. It was comfortable, no pressure, and generous. I hope you guys decide to keep up the practice (I bet we could even find someone to donate the donuts each week to keep them free).
