Worship Set List May 25: Worry, Babies and “Be The Centre”

Yet another weekend where God’s presence was felt at Sundridge Community Church.

This Sunday at Sunridge we heard Greg give a message about worry in
part two of our series, How to Stay Upbeat in A Downturn.  Given our
economic times, of course this was timely.

We dedicated a lot of babies in the service.  I think this is a great
ceremony, however, I wonder what creative ways other than in a Sunday
morning service.  Ideas?  If you do it in a Sunday service, how do you
make it relevant to those worshiping?

We did a song that I have always wanted to do by Michael Frye–”Be the
Centre”.  I liked the musical texture and the placement in the service
and the basic theme–”…be my source, be my light, Jesus.”  Making
Jesus the center is indeed an antidote to worry.

    “Be The Centre” is a great song – people always seem to respond really well when we do it.

    We do child dedications twice a year and it’s always a community event – the pastor has a role, the parents have a role and the congregation has a role.

    I think I have the same questions about baby dedications during services. They don’t rub me the wrong way or anything; I just wonder if we’re putting them in the best setting.

    By the way, we used Integrity’s “iWorship Flexx” video segments (rather than the complete one with the click) on “Mighty to Save” and I received a couple of negative comments about the size and readability of the text. This is, I believe, primarily due to the visual environment in our facility — we keep the house lights up (unfortunately).

    We celebrate dedications during the worship time as well. I’m in the same boat wondering if it needs to somehow be done differently. It’s more of a break after the first worship song and greeting. This week it’s being done when our Children’s Ministry pastor teaches about adoption and it’s spiritual picture of God adopting us into HIs family. Seems a little more relevant to the message this time around for us.

    I wasn’t at church but we spent some time with my wife’s relatives on Sunday. A transitional period of my wife’s grandfather’s house to my wife’s cousin’s house. They bought the house and are planning on living in it from now on. It was kind of a strange feeling.

    Our church dedicates babies at the end of the service one at a time, one week at a time. It’s very simple, with the family committing to raise their child up in a manner where they will come to know Christ, and then a charge to the church to commit to be teachers, Vacation Bible School leaders, etc… and they all respond “we will.”

    Depending on the… uh… production schedule, that can mean several consecutive weeks of baby dedication, but it does a couple of things. One, it gives each family the chance to commit to the church anew, and makes them feel like their family is important, and two, it reinforces in the church body that we think that young families are important.

    We plan quarterly dedication ceremonies each year that include dialogue from Dad and Mom, their child’s name and its meaning, as well as the family’s desires both as parents and from the fellowship.

    We do our best to utilize media in the service to allow ample time for each family to bear testimony in a creative way (2 min. interviews, often about their highest and lowest point to date with their child and how God has worked through both times). We bookend our worship set to allow a “seamless feel” from ceremony to sermon, often using families involved for special music. The pastor is always prepped from the staff and tech, prepared to insure his comfort with the schedule; without it, we couldn’t do this well.

    We even exchange vows with the family to encourage them and reflect our covenant with one another because we know that family members are the single greatest influencer of faith in Christ. We treat each family individually as our Children’s Pastor prays for each family member by name… and it does take a while (25-30 minutes), but it’s an incredible time because folks understand how serious we believe the integrity of the family is to the strength of the church.

    We will make changes again in the near future to avoid being ritualistic, but as long as people continue to respond in such a positive way, we’ll keep on keepin’ on!
