Youtube Downloading…a quick primer to get the FLV file!

Picture_11Want to take a YouTube movie and grab it? Here is a basic primer thanks to Jim, our video ministry leader at my church.

  • Cut the URL for the youtube video into your clipboard
  • Go to www.youddl.com, and paste the URL into the field for the URL
  • It will save the file
  • You then need to add an extension ".flv" when you save the file you download
  • Then, get a FLV player, or converter.  (Check the links on the site).

That’s it, thanks to Jim.  You can then use various converters to make it an AVI, Mpeg, etc.

Cool. I’ll have to see how that site is. I’ve been using videodl.org to do that for a long time which works well also. And iSquint is a great program for converting from FLV for MAC.

One that I’ve used a lot is keepvid.com. Works with a lot of different sites.

Wow. Usually reading the blog… but not for tech secrets! :) Good to know.

  5. Ryan…I have not let my wannabe geek side come out too much on the blog, but I do subscribe to Wired, have up to 6 computers networked at my house and read CNet. I fantasize about being in the aile at Fry’s Electronics. A wannebe geek, but you never know…eh?

or download this application called tube sock at this link…

    http://tinyurl.com/pytp3

it just does the entire process for you.

  7. Patrick,

The forums on that site says the software does not work like it used to… is that true. Also, does it convert files from FLV to AVI, MPEG, etc. I can’t seem to get that info

I’ve had smashing success with a $29 program called “Xilisoft YouTube Video Converter” — http://www.xilisoft.com/youtube-video-converter.html — easily (like “drag and drop” easy) converts YouTube stuff to WMV or MPG. Well worth the investment. They have several other cool, cheap applications.

I should note that when we rebroadcast videos, there are sometimes copyright issues. However, I haven’t ever gotten a “no” from anyone when asking to use something in a service.

thanks for mentioning the copyright issues dean. many people think that if it’s on the internet or especially from you tube that there aren’t any copyright issues to deal with. the reality is that there can be multiple issues since you may need permission for the pictures, background music and written content all as separate items.
