I've worked with bands both ways. Without a shield is definitely the best in our situation. Ambient sound is beautiful. When drums are miked properly and the drummer plays musically, to the room, for the style/feel of the song, the drums will sound great! No shield.

It allows the drummer to play to the song and not try to "hold back" If it calls for fortissimo, than you can play loud.....since most churches run with avioms these days, you can hear what's going on and not have to worry about your volume.
