“Old Fashioned” stuff works: church picnics, board games & community

6831041

I love that “old fashioned” stuff still works in our 21st Century world. Yesterday I experienced the old standby called the church picnic. Over 400 volunteers showed up as our Sunridge Church staff served them for once–three-legged races, hot dogs and blankets laid out on the lawn. It was a blast!

How about board games? My family has about 100 board games it seems. Even though I love Xbox and we all are on computers or with the TV, the board game time is special. We played “Apple to Apples” on Saturday night and the fun and competition made the end of the week land right where it needed to land.

The idea of friends and community come to mind as something urban people have lost, it seems. I got to move into a new house and had friends from my small group and my church help me beyond belief. When I thanked each of them all they could say in return was, “this is what friends do.” Now, that makes living in a community a meaningful thing.

What “old fashioned” things are you digging lately?

We love playing board games, especially on a cold winter’s night. But my favourite thing to do is hanging out with friends in our life group – having a BBQ just makes it that much better.

BBQ…YES that sounds perfect with friends!

That is a seriously large number of hotdogs. As for me, I’m loving poetry these days. That’s pretty old fashioned, right? And Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice (with Zombies).

a lot of dogs, indeed… we cooked and ate over 700!
