So many choices but some are winning out: How are you connecting with social media?

Social Media seems to be a broad term now for anyway we connect using IM, Twitter.com, Facebook.com and so forth. I enjoy the platform of blogging because I get to interact with real people about things I care about. Twitter, Facebook and other modes are enjoyable to me as well for that very reason.  Here is how it works for me right now, subject to change.

  • Twitter: I get to find out about the news, and with those closest to me, I get to be invovled in praying for their lives. Twitter opens up the world and tightens the circle of people I already know. For some reason, people are interesting in the micro-blogging of my life. By the way, you can follow me here at @rkweblog.
  • Facebook: I connect with family, old friends, and interact with people at my church. My personal Facebook seems to be a place to share affinities with mostly. Our church has a fan page. (Sunridge Church Fan Page).
  • IM: people who read my blog or who I have met may choose to chat with me (either Facebook or AIM, etc.) and it can go from anything like questions back and forth with worship leaders or pastors to discussing a project with a ministry volunteer. (My AIM, MSN, Yahoo)
  • Blogging: This blog has been an amazing place for important discussions for me. I have met and continued conversations with people I might have never met otherwise. It is a place to influence and be influenced.

The rest: MySpace is dying, but is a place that bands still use well. I have Virb, Tokbox, LinkedIn, Vimeo, Youtube, Flicker, Picasa, and more with FriendFeed being a great place to hub all the stuff I post.

Well, that was my summary of my current usage of social media. How are you connecting with social media and what is working for you?

    I primarily use Facebook, Twitter, and blogging.

    I use Twitter to pass information and get information quickly.

    I use Facebook to connect with past and current friends in a more relational (what is going on in your life) kind of way.

    And I use blogging to have deep conversations about faith and life. These kind of conversations can’t happen on Twitter (140 characters) and aren’t meant for facebook.

      Tyler, Indeed…having too deep of conversations on the public wall of Facebook can be tragic and worse than email debating. Blogs are great for that kind of conversation.

    i think it’s a tie between twitter and my blog. I will only twitter once, maybe twice a day. I don’t like people who twitter 17 times a day. Few people are that important to have that much to twitter, but even the president of the united states is more restrained about what he says on Twitter. However in some areas I think my blog is the cornerstone. While people follow me on twitter, the biggest draw ends up being my blog.

    I use twitter, FB and I have a blog.

    I’m pretty similar to Tyler in that I use FB to connect with friends, Twitter to catch news & quick updates and the blog for the other stuff. I only use my yahoo IM to chat with my husband, but I often use the FB chat feature for friends. Skype is available, but not terribly often used.

    For deeper conversations I stick to email – even if they commented on the blog. Some things don’t need to be seen by everyone.

    Anyone have experience with prayer and twitter? It seems pretty powerful to me with that application.
