Rich, I think you're right on with these. Points 2 & 4 are absolutely connected as well. One issue any futurecasting church will need to address is the growing disparity between the styles of senior pastors and their worship leaders. W. leaders/W. pastors are getting younger by the day partially because of the type of music that is being played. It's a bit tough for people to swallow when little old Doris is banging out Hillsong United on the piano, even if it's good.

There is an ever growing generational gap (and consequently style disparity) between the two most visible roles in the church service. I'm not saying we all need to be similar, but when the senior pastor is old enough to be the father (or even grandfather) of the worship leader, there needs to be ground made up somewhere. My kudos to those pastors who have learned to adapt their communication to reach a different generation. Too much of the time, most of the adapting is thrown upon worship leaders and their teams.

Any thoughts on solutions?

Tom...perhaps my articulation is not helpful with 1 & 2. See if the following helps:

1-simply that worship leading as CNN reported is in the top 5 most stressful vocations and the carnage of that reality is going to surface. I see many frustrated more than in any time in the past 20 years. Does that ring true to what you are seeing?

2-other aspects of our worship are surpassing music as the flashpoints for conflict. With video venues, the glare of celebrity and high expectations the sermon "style" is bound to be a discussion at the water cooler more so in the future. Also, I see theology differences becoming greater as the evangelical church is now lead by a new group of people. Makes sense?

I work with over two hundred churches in North America and I'm not intelligent enough to completely understand your first two points, however I certainly follow you on the last three and completely agree. Great forecasting!

Good predictions - especially #5.

I wonder how the economy will shape most small-to-mid-size churches in 2010 - more bi-vocational ministry?

Got it. Makes sense. I'm pretty sure I'm in agreement on all five...

Directional roles: rather than just directing music, I see a trend developing where the direction of the entire ministry is part of the role and practice.
