New Adventure: week 1 “The Big News”

New Adventure

If you have not heard, the big news for the Kirkpatrick family is that my role as Worship Pastor at Sunridge Community Church has ended this past week. It has been three years, minus a month. I am going to miss the people I invested three years of my life into. It is obviously a calling for me, not just employment. This sudden parting for me puts my family in a position that many other church staff people face. It’s what I call a “triple whammy”.

The hardest part was sitting around our kitchen table last Thursday and looking both my kids in the eye to deliver the news. Tears were shed. Big tears. “Dad, I’m confused” was my son’s response. My girl said that she does not want to lose another youth group. We prayed, hugged and all agreed that even though we don’t know the next leg on this journey that we are in this together. That is what families do.

I got to tell my kids and wife how proud I am of them. Ministry is a family business. Each weekend my wife helps with the tech in the production booth while my son is her apprentice. My daughter often leads in singing and worship with me and has become a godly young woman who is impacting others. At home and with people we truly do this ministry thing…together.

The first hit of the ministry tranistion “triple whammy” is losing your job–the second is losing your home church. Things cannot remain the same when it does not work out for a leader who leaves the employment of a church. That is just the facts. The third hit is the possibility of losing not just place of worship but friends, home and town if we relocate.

I think God is putting three paths before us that I asked my wife and kids to bring before God with me. The first is that God somehow might provide employment for me locally so that we could remain in our town and community. The second is a relocation, but if right could be an amazing move for all of us. The third was a huge “?” which means we have to be open to something we cannot even see yet.

I encouraged my kids, age 12 and 16, to be free to feel what they feel and to pray as their hearts desire. We are in this together and their prayers and thoughts are going to play a big part of how the next steps of the journey are made. Just like our recent family vacation, they know their input matters. God can give them something they desire on this journey better than their parent’s attempted to do with our family road trip such as video games for my boy and seeing a friend for my girl.

So to my family and friends, please pray with us for both our practical physical needs but also the emotional and spiritual side, too. Many have sent notes and calls and all have been an encouragement. Words do matter. We need to do this together with you and your prayers and help are all part of the adventure we now embark.

I am going to leave you with a verse my daughter shared on her Facebook which I remember my mother sharing with me during some trials growing up:

“‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” JEREMIAH 29:11

    Rich,

Will definitely be praying for you and your family. Definitely not excited to hear about a job loss, but excited to hear what God is going to do. If there’s anything I can do, just let me know.

You have been an amazing friend to me. I am almost hoping that you get to stay local that way we can continue our friendship, but realize that God may have other plans for you. I’ll be praying for you.

bless you and your family bro. God’s got big ideas for you and your family.

Cindy and I both shed tears as we prayed for you and your family this week, Rich. God alone knows why He allows things like this to happen, but one thing is always true: He intends to work something good through it. Romans 8:28 “For we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love the Lord, to those who are called according to His purpose.”
Praying that God will navigate this uncharted territory for you, and expecting some really good things to result.

    Rich,

So sorry to hear about this sudden change. We recently had some really good friends go through the same thing at our church. I know how hard it can be on a family. You’re right – it’s not just the loss of a job, which can be hard enough all in itself. It’s also the loss of the support system other people can fall back on in their relationships at church. When anyone else loses a job at church, they can still have their church family to help them through.

I’ll definitely be in prayer for you and your family. Hopefully there are still some close friends you have there to help see you through this transition.

    Praying!

Thanks for articulating something that not a lot of us have experienced, it helps us to pray and be more sensitive to those who serve us in our own churches.

Been praying for all of you, and will continue!

Rich, My prayers are with you. I know exactly what you are going through as I am going through that exact situation right now, save that my kids are younger and we don’t have that complication to throw into the mix.

Let me know if you need to talk, I’m a good listener.

Rich, you and your family has been and will continue to be on my prayer list. Emilie is at the top of the list as she has come to mind often over the last few days. Her spirit, her heart, her mind, her voice, her creativity…all of it God will continue to use as her life unfolds each day.

It is my sincere prayer that you will be comforted during this difficult time and that you will feel God’s providence through it all.

    Psalm 139 offers this promise:
“Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence?
    If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
if I make my bed in the depths,a you are there.
If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
if I settle on the far side of the sea,
even there your hand will guide me,
your right hand will hold me fast.”

    May God hold you fast.

Rich, I’m continuing to pray for you and your family. You’ve articulated well the challenges pastors face that many may not have ever considered. Lean into God and those who truly love you – those relationships do not change or go away and are such a source of strength.

Blessings my friend. Praying God’s BEST for you!

Rich, I was just going through a few feeds when I came across this. As a fellow dad and husband, I know firsthand the gut reaction that this can give a guy. Take heart, and know your next place in ministry is just around the corner.

I’ll keep you in my prayers this weekend, and we’re looking forward to hearing your next big thing!
