The moment matters. What does it feel like to be lost in time? I remember as a kid those moments when time seemed to stand still. No wind, sound, or light could move it any faster. Cruising on a bicycle through suburban streets, into open fields, and enjoying apricot fruit freshly picked from nearby orchards captivated countless days. The wash that divided our housing tract growing up smelled awful, which made it all the more fun to explore. There were no cell phones tracking us with GPS. And, we could stay out until the street lamps began the process of warming up. (more…)

I suspect that many of my worship leader and creative arts leaders have programmed some memorable and even outrageous moments. Now, these are not super-edgy, but at the time some felt these to be out-of-the-box.
- I love beach balls, and for a service I decided that dropping several hundred from the catwalks with strobes would do. Each ball represented a decision made to follow Jesus from various mission trips, inner city outreaches and back yard Bible clubs of four sister churches working together.
- Dueling drummers are cool! Ever play a set with two full kits? How about doing this all in a worship service. For my final service as worship pastor at a church I served, the two drummers were very close to me and I had to have them BOTH play. It rocked, but the 113 dB sound pressure level emptied a few seats during the Saturday service. Ouch! (more…)

I am finally going through my office, which has been boxed for over a year since departing my last church ministry. Besides finding my Spock bobblehead piece, I found an old sketch book. This sketch is from 1993 and is a study of a halogen torch lamp and an old-school push button phone. (more…)

We all have the unexpected rainy days, right? Everything you planned or hoped for just goes sideways in a moment. It does not have to be anything tragic but simply just enough to get you off balance. It does not take much to push us to the brink, given the right set of circumstances. (more…)
