I will surely miss the worship experiences I have been a part of at Sunridge, my former church. Here is a tribute to the last three years. One of the best group of volunteers in music and tech served with me during these three years and I will dearly miss you guys and the amazing people of Sunridge! Now, I am excited about the possible next steps God has before me. Blessings!

Recap: This was a special weekend in that two young worship ministry guys converged in a social media connection that could only happen in the 21st Century (see photo). Nick Arbuckle is a worship leader and student from Texas who found me at a conference via twitter last summer and ended up being our worship intern this summer. Sean Pritzkau is a student from Rochester, New York who intends to serve as a pastor some day. He has followed my blog and I his since he was in high school. Sean ended up staying the night at my house and sitting in on guitar on a song. Both these young men are impressive and I am humbled to have some part in their lives and am excited how in the 21st Century I can pray with a native student in the Philippines and encourage the next generation here in my church and elsewhere in North America.

As far as the service, Britt Sipe delivered a message on the Helmet of Salvation and Sword of the Spirit in a series entitled “Iron Man” and our congregation seemed to respond well to our closing worship song “How He Loves” with hands and voices raised more than what we see usually. It was a very sweet time in God’s presence.

Set List: We sang a new song by Phil Wickham entitled “Cielo” (heaven) and in the transition I tried to connect people to the fact that we indeed live in a heavenly realm as believers. Spiritual warfare makes sense when we see that there is another reality beyond the surface of things.

Recap: This was a Sunday I led worship after taking 12 days away on vacation. It was great to be back! Nick did super job the previous week. See and read about it on his blog. All I can say is we did have to scramble a bit behind the scenes with last minute cancellations and other minor fun things like printers not working and copy machine jams. But, our team as usual did a great job. Thanks to Sunridge music and tech people for coming through for our church week after week!

Set List: Here are the songs from this past weekend…

Hosanna – Paul Baloche

Great Things – Matt Maher

A Thousand Hallelujahs – Mark Roach

Ciello – Phil Wickham

Recap: This past Sunday our Interim Pastor, Brit, was back in the pulpit with the “Iron Man” series which is a look at spiritual warfare from the book of Ephesians. One item that we added to the services was a celebration update about our Summer Sizzlers outreach where 74 kids made decisions to follow Jesus! Paula, our Children’s Ministry Director shared the news and the process. Yeah God! I love it when in worship we celebrate not just in music but even information about what God is doing. Go here to check our out videos of sermons and music.

Set List: I just love Matt Maher and this song “As It Is In Heaven” we did this week.

Recap: This past Sunday we had our intern Nick help lead with me once again and had Teen Challenge represented by a men’s choir. It was moving to hear the stories of God’s power in the lives of these young men and then to see our extension to Teen Challenge through our own Mel Grams, our InTouch Pastor. Mel is quite a figure in our church, having served in ministry for over 50 years.

Set List: We had four songs to give room for the special items in the service, introducing Christy Nockel’s “A Mighty Fortress” which went over very well with our folks.

Awesome Is The Lord Most High – Chris Tomlin

Recap: We accomplished going to our summer format of one service at 9:30 AM this past weekend. It was great to see the room full. Our room and presentation works far better with over 500 than with less than that. This Sunday, Nick Arbuckle helped lead–our summer worship intern from TX. Besides Nick, we had our keys guy fill in on bass (not his first instrument) and a new drummer added to the mix. With all of that going on I think it went great.

Set List: We introduced two new songs. Off of the Passion Awaken CD we introduced “Our God” and the now-classic-but-new-to-us song by John Mark McMillan entitled “How He Loves.” It was a great thing to have John Mark in our building singing that song a few weeks ago in concert.

Recap: MANCHURCH is becoming a tradition at Sunridge, with a Sunday we call “church for guys. Britt Sipe was the emcee in a Letterman-like monologue and interviewed his life-long buddy Mark Trotter who delivered a challenging and timely message to us.
Our band has fun on these days, with jams and an extended praise time of soloing with instruments. Guys like it when other guys rip on their horns or guitars, etc. All of that was in the context of expressing worship! I love how in the Book of Psalms we find every instrument played “loudly”–cymbals, drums, strings, horns…

Set List: We had a shorter set than usual with all the fun videos.

No Greater Love – Matt Maher

You Are Good – Israel Houghton

Recap: This week we tried a divergence from our usual electrified set and had mostly acoustic instruments. When you are used to one way of arranging things, it is not as easy to strip the sound down as you might think. Kudos to our team for their work this past Sunday! I am sorry that the camera people kept Ben’s head cut out for part of the set. Ben happens to be a bit taller than the ladies next to him.

Set List: I debuted a song “Drink The Divine” which seemed to go over pretty well and fit the vibe of the morning. One band member suggested people pull out their lighters for it! Choosing songs for “unplugged” our of our current list was not easy. Boy, learning a lot.

Hosanna – Paul Baloche

Glory to God – Fee/Beeching

Drink The Divine – Kirkpatrick

Your Love Is Extravagant – Darrell Evans

Your Love Oh Lord – Third Day

Recap: This morning at my church we mixed things up a bit by putting the candles up and electric guitars down for one weekend. I appreciated the flexibility of our worship team in helping me adjust the arrangements and play multiple instruments–thanks Bob and Dan for switching on bass. One thing I knew but did not fully realize until our execution is that it is actually more work to pull of something simple and acoustic than our usual rock-oriented sound. It worked great!

Set List: We did some familiar songs and one of our newer favorites, “Open Hands” by Matt Papa. The first time I heard this song live was actually an acoustic version by Matt Papa himself this winter in Nashville.

Everlasting God – Brenton Brown

All We Need – Charlie Hall

Open Hands – Matt Papa

Be The Centre – Michael Frye

Blessed Be Your Name – Matt Redman
