Leadership: I am a leader, and I have the scars to prove it!

leadership

Yes, I am a leader and I have the scars to prove it. If you are in leadership, then you obviously know what I mean. To put yourself out in front often means taking the bullet and flak first. If you are not out in front, then you are not really leading.

Scars are the authenticating marks of faithful discipleship and true spiritual leadership–Oswald Sanders

Sanders states here a reality that our leader-entitlement culture is hard pressed to embrace. In an age of golden parachutes during economic crisis, are we as spiritual leaders whining about the pain and scars of our leadership or are we willing to sacrifice for the good of those we lead our legitimate desires?

The first and only point here is that leading will scar you. Leading will be painful, lonely and cost even those closest to you. If you and I are not willing to pay a higher price than the pack, we are not a leader of the pack. We may have the title, salary and position but a leader we are not!

So, I think we can choose to wear our scars and be content that the price of seeing people come to faith in Jesus and grow more like Him is worth it.

Discuss: should we accept the pain and scars, or isolate and protect ourselves and those closest to us from the cost of leading? Is NO PAIN NO GAIN really for me as a leader?

The questions we all are asking: “Hey leader, are you for real?”

leadership

Well, if you are a leader in your church over the spiritual care of others, are you for real? Do you represent what you teach, and does your reputation match the real you? Yes, these are painful questions I ask myself. The reason I know I have to ask them is because everyone around me asks them to one degree or another. The honest answer would be, “not really.” I am not that “for real” or at least as much as I should be. Gasp. Its true. I am selfish and at times do not see the incredible value of the people right in front of me, including at times my very own family. Yeah, I would do anything for the local church. But perhaps that is the problem. (more…)

Targeted marketing, facebook and fat pastors…

fat_pastor_fitnessThis ad (shown in the picture) has been on my Facebook sidebar. In case you don’t already know, Facebook data-mines your info and spits out ads just like Google search–or similar to that. This one cracks me up!

“Get Fit To Preach” with a bald, ripped guy who probably is a model who never heard of parsing Greek in order to preach. Or, if he is a pastor, I bet he preaches from the gym, not just attends the church of gym.

All this to say that I have become soft and am mad the Big Brother of Facebook found me out and reminded me of this on the sidebar of my profile. Thanks, Facebook.

What ridiculous advertisement have you endured on your social media site of choice?

Leadership on the incline: Why are you surprised that things are so hard?

“Why are you surprised that things are so hard?”

I heard these words from a prophet some years ago.  Well, she was an African national in exile after losing her husband who cleaned our church.  A prayer warrior, she came to me in my office and looked puzzled and asked my permission to speak those words to me.  She said that in prayer God had revealed that message for me.
