“Get Fit To Preach” with a bald, ripped guy who probably is a model who never heard of parsing Greek in order to preach. Or, if he is a pastor, I bet he preaches from the gym, not just attends the church of gym.

All this to say that I have become soft and am mad the Big Brother of Facebook found me out and reminded me of this on the sidebar of my profile. Thanks, Facebook.

What ridiculous advertisement have you endured on your social media site of choice?

Personally, I have learned more, seen more and done more out of brokenness than out of my talent, experience or skill. During times of weakness it seems God makes Himself more real to me. When you are a leader–fill in the blank like being a dad, a pastor, a music director, a worship leader–you never quite measure up to the task. At least, that is what I think of myself when I am broken. This includes the all important leadership of self.

One example was when I was able to lose over 50 pounds in 2006 and keep most of it off–until moving and gaining a bit of it back recently. I had the threat of cancer, and the impending surgery and my failing thyroid apparently made this all that much harder emotionally as well as physically. With the help of my wife, friends, prayer I realized that I really could not accomplish this with my own resources. Results began to be visible and real.

It takes a huge effort to change. Leadership at its best effects change in yourself and in others. When I am humble enough to see my weaknesses and lack of resources without God’s intervention I am ready to lead. I can listen better, speak better and think more clearly. My skills, talents and experiences actually come into focus.

God’s strength indeed manifests when I am weak. (2 Corinthians 12:9) Only then can I lead. So, when the temptation to boast about my accomplishments rears its head, the game plan is to see that accomplishments of worth originate from God’s showing up in my ineptitude.

Does this make sense in your experience? Do you see God as more real when you are “with it” or when you are weak?

As one who is living this out, I think it is interesting when the media shines a light on the issue. Pastors are fat. We need to work on this issue just like any other sin. After losing over 50 pounds last year and struggling with my weight for years, I am not ready to give up. We need to be examples as Christians when it comes to health and fitness. After all, the body is a temple.

Here is what was written in the news at the Sacramento Bee: Weighty sermons: more pastors are preaching healthy lifestyles…and starting with themselves.

…The percentage of clergy who are overweight and therefore at risk
for serious health problems is higher than among the general U.S.
population, according to reports on clergy health.

"They’re
pretty stressed people who work long hours and often have unhealthy
eating habits — think of all those church potlucks," says Robin Swift,
director of the Clergy Health Initiative for the Duke Divinity School.
"A lot of them feel overwhelmed."

In 2004, a survey of 2,500
ministers by Pulpit and Pew, based at Duke, found that 76 percent of
Christian clergy were overweight, compared with 61 percent of the
general population.

Over at Vintage Faith a good discussion is going on about this topic. All I can say is that this thing is not that easy. It has been a hard part of my life’s journey to figure some of this out. Christian’s should lead in this area, right?
