Recap: This past Sunday we did “Great Things” by Matt Maher again, which worked well once again. “My Savior God” is a powerful song, and I loved how our team invited people in with that song. Another good moment was the movement from “Great is Thy Faithfulness” to “How Great Is Our God.” Yeah, its true that the word “great” was prominent. However overused, pretty much everyone still understands what that word means! Our sub-theme of the name of Jesus I felt tied our set together. My hope is that people who come to church each week understand that what we are doing is making a big deal about Jesus, not ourselves.

Worship Recap:

This morning we had Britt Sipe teach as Greg was gone celebrating his anniversary. (Congrats to him and Robin!). Britt talked about penguins…or, you are just gonna have to listen to the podcast.

My daughter helped lead this morning with me, taking lead on the last part of the worship set and rousing us to celebrate our King with “Sing to the King”. Emilie loves leading worship and it is awesome to see your child grow into leadership in anything, but especially in ministry!

Set List:

We introduced a new song by Lincoln Brewster, “Let Your Glory Shine” which really grooved. Again, Sunridge is so blessed to have a worship team like we do!

Worship Recap: Cannot believe its a new month and new sermon series already. Today we began a new series about the Sermon on The Mount entitled: “Change.” We are getting low in the drum area, so I am so grateful for friends in town with Craig of Venture Christian letting us borrow Tyler who did a great job with us today on drums. Talk about generosity and the churches working to help each other. Thanks to Craig and Tyler.

We partook communion today. I got to do the setup. I made two points about it. First, I said we need to find beauty in the act instead of just going through the motions. The sunset is a beautiful thing, but if we reduce it intellectually to something that simply reflects God’s beauty rather than enjoy the sunset, we miss the point. In the same way, communion is an act that reflects the beauty in the sacrifice of love from Jesus to us. We should feel some sort of awe beyond a simple thought of it as symbolic like from a text book. Second, I mentioned how we do this together. So, I encouraged people to talk to each other in confessional tones about how they came today, ready or not. And, I encouraged friends and family to take it together.

Set List: This week, we introduced “I Cling to the Cross” which ends with a traditional refrain from “I Have Decided to Follow Jesus.”

I Will Boast – Paul Baloche

Your Name is Holy – Brian Doerksen

Invitation Fountain – Michael J. Pritzl

Recap: This week was the second in our series “Bounce” at Sunridge. We showed a video sermon of Bill Hybels about handling an economic downturn. Kevin Kline, the former worship pastor was featured and warmly received by our church. It was great to get to know him a bit better and share the worship leading with him. Our attendence also was up again, which is not a bad thing. All in all it was an impactful morning.

Set List: We introduced Mark Roach’s “As Long As I Have You” which hits the theme of going through storms and the song “Jesus Messiah” by Chris Tomlin.

RECAP: Advent, The Arrival is our series and theme. We used candles on a stand with the traditional 3 purple, one pink and one white candles. The Advent theme for this week was “Prophet” where we had kids read scripture out of Isaiah about the coming Messiah–Jesus. The element of the Advent candles, new Christmas stage design and kids choir made this morning a great start of the holiday season. Child dedications also made our service full along with tables with our Give Love Away: Christmas Edition set up all around our worship center. We are asking each member to consider one of our current serve group projects from The Brook (homeless ministry) to helping unwed mothers or even support for orphans.

SET LIST: Our set was short this week with all that was in it, but seemed to work pretty welll. Here are the songs…

Salvation is Here – Joel Houston

Our God Saves – Paul Baloche

Blessed Be Your Name – Matt Redman

RECAP: Today we spent some time with an open mic! Greg, our pastor, instructed us to come forward and make a mosaic and that if a piece is too big it might wreck the mosaic. What a great way of encouraging brevity. We had dozens between our two services come forward and share thanks for a restored relationship ruined by drug addiction, to a man who was banished from his church for having AIDS who shared thanks for the love and acceptance he has found from The Brook and our church. The stories of many trials were heard in this mosaic. All the bad news of cancer and divorce and rejection were put in the light of seeing the reality of God in even the toughest of circumstances. For me, this was one of the most moving and meaningful services we have had at Sunridge. I know, I have said that two weeks in a row.

One element we added, besides our celebration of communion, was a responsive scripture reading of Psalm 103. In the next weeks we will try to use candles and other traditional elements in our worship. The reading seemed to work.

SET LIST: This weeks songs were surrounded by communion and the theme of being grateful to God for the ultimate gift of Jesus.

Hosanna – Paul Baloche & Brenton Brown

You Grace Is Enough – Matt Mahr

Matchless – Aaron Shust

Sweetly Broken – Jeremy Riddle

Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone) – Newton, Tomlin, Giglio

How does open mic sharing work in your church? How do you tell the story of God in the lives of your people?
